Mango Lassi

Mango Lassi

There’s something mysterious about a mango lassi, or is it me? On the face of it, it’s a fruit shake, plain and simple, but the delicious, heaven scented twist of cardamom is simply next level. Call me a cheesy Westerner, but I immediately want to burn my Nag Champa incense and drape saris around my house (crickey, I am cheesy). Oh, you don’t fool me: I can’t be the only one who gets inspired and wanders through the adjoining grocery store grabbing jars of  Major Grey Mango Chutney, Lime pickle, saffron, huge bags of basmati rice, and if my supply is running low, English tea, stocking up on PG Tips, Early Grey, and Chocolate covered Hob Nobs. Wha hey. Mango Lassi is absolutely divine on it’s own, or serve it as a cooling accompaniment to spicy Indian dishes. Either way, it’s a winner, and a exotic shake to tickle your taste buds all year round. Mango Lassi 2 cups chilled mango pulp (or 2 ripe mangoes, peeled, cut, and blended) 4 cups plain nonfat yogurt 1/2 cup filtered water 1/4 teaspoon rose water (optional) 1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder 4 tablespoons agave syrup (optional) 1. Blend all of the ingredients until [...]

Green Juice Fast Recipes

10 day juice fast

Toby and I recently watched the documentary, “Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead,” about a man who was 100 pounds overweight and suffering from a myriad of diseases. After 60 days of green juicing, he shed the weight and now enjoys incredible health, all from drinking green juice and a bit of exercise. The movie inspired us so much that we decided to do a juice cleanse of our own. Our reason for the fast was simply to have a bit of a spring clean for the new year. Last Sunday, we both gave up what seemed like everything, except raw organic fruits and vegetables. I’m not going to lie, we both endured massive headaches in the first 24 hours from the loss of our beloved tea and coffee. Thankfully by day 2 we were rocking, rolling, and feeling fine. I’m not going to say that I didn’t miss my comfort foods, but it was worth it to just give my digestive system a break, enjoy a light and breezy feeling, mental clarity, and more energy than I imagined without the boost of caffeine. By the end of the week, Toby lost 9 pounds and I have lost 7. If you’re [...]

The Green Smoothie for Kids

Kid's Green Smoothie

Miracle of miracles: my son just had a 2 cups of raw kale and he’s smiling! Yup, no negotiations, no moaning, no groaning, just requests for “more smoothie please.” My son is most certainly not one of those amazing raw foodist kids we’ve all head about (but never actually met). I’m not saying that he doesn’t like vegetables, but honesty is the best policy: I smooth things out with a little olive oil, garlic, and a bit of sea salt, a tangy stir fry, or a veggies blended into Mama’s zesty tomato sauce. You know the score. Apart from the color, this drink is an easy sell: mangoes, bananas, and pineapple juice blended to hide the nutritious kale. I served this smoothie to Jake’s class this week and 20 kids asked for seconds! The Green Smoothie for Kids 4 cups raw kale, rinsed  and deveined 2 bananas, peeled 2 cups of mango juice (fresh or no sugar added brand) 1 cup pineapple (fresh or no sugar added brand) handful of ice cubes 1. Put all of the ingredients into a blender and whizz until smooth. Serves 2

Vanilla Almond Milk

Vanilla Almond Milk

I’ve been drinking almond milk for years, but to be honest, I’ve never really found “my brand.” Sometimes the vanilla flavor can taste a bit synthetic, it’s too sweet, or the texture is too thick or thin. O.k. o.k., so I’m a little A-type when it comes to my almond milk! The test of a great nut milk is whether it’s drinkable on it’s own. After years to searching, I thought it was time to make my own batch. The only reason I’ve been holding off for so long is the thought that it would  too complicated to make. Boy was I wrong. What I love about making almond milk is that you can gauge it exactly to suit your taste, and there’s no funky fillers to worry about. You can either uses a nut milk bag, or a fine sieve to strain out the nuts and spices. You can find nut milk bags at your nearest health food store, or buy them on Amazon (info below). I also created a Chai-flavored nut milk with chai spices I bought from my local Indian grocer. I have to say that I’m leaning to my chai flavor nut milk, but you decide! Feel [...]

A Cup of Tea for The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee

Cuppa Tea

Why the heck am I sharing a tea recipe ? To celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee of course! Toby, Jake, and I watched the wet and windy celebrations on the BBC this morning, and I have to say I’m constantly amazed at how nothing can dampen (no pun intended) the spirits of the British. Cucumber sandwiches, tea, biscuits, and Victoria Sponge were served in torrential rain. Royalists flanking the river Thames smiled from ear to ear, waving Union Jack flags cocooned in foul weather gear. Royal artists commissioned to paint the scene of the Queen and Co. on the Royal barge were protected by red, white, and blue umbrellas, but their canvases took on a fuzzy, impressionistic slant due to the excess moisture. Oh, England. How I love thee. Earl Grey Tea enough boiled, filtered water to fill a tea cup 1 earl grey tea bag organic soy milk (or try dairy, almond, or oat milk) tsp agave syrup  (raw honey, organic sugar) 1. Put the kettle on (or a pan of water) to boil. Pour into a tea cup. Add the tea bag and steep for 2 minutes (or 3 if you like it very strong). Remove the tea [...]
