Heavenly Hummus with Toasted Pine Nuts and Herbs

This moreish, silky, hummus is going to keep you coming back for, well, more. What can you say for a recipe that is so easy, nutritious, and full of flavor? Let’s just thank the Food Gods quickly and start munching. Of course we all know that it’s great with sliced pita (I am dipping and eating as we speak) or rice cakes (you devils). If you have any friends that need a reason to eat their raw veggies, serve this delicious dip alongside cut carrots, broccoli, snap peas, peppers, and cucumber (almost any veg will do), and they will soon forget about their beloved ranch dressing. I use the word beloved with much trepidation here. You can of course whip up this dip with dried garbanzos (chickpeas for my friends across the pond) by soaking them over night, cooking, then rubbing off the skins, etc, but who’s looking for a culinary medal of honor ( I am nervously looking over my shoulder)? Will your friends and family wax lyrical about your time slaving over the stove, or will you win beaucoup points on looks and taste? I’m thinking Yummy Mummy here. Say no more. Onwards cooking soldiers, with a can [...]

Asparagus in Lemon, Garlic, and Olive Oil

Spring has finally arrived when I see S&M bound stalks of asparagus flirting with me at Farmer’s Market. I had the intention of making another dish for the post, but there they were, standing at attention, luring me in. Admittedly, I cherish these moments when food sweeps me away. I will forever be a prisoner of my own taste buds. Crumbs. When I am on the hunt for asparagus, I go for slim stalks, rather than their chubby cousins, as they have a sweeter flavor……and heck, I think they’re much more cute. All vain hope of getting into the big leagues of Ina Garten et al in the next century will be dashed after this admission. Sorry Geoffery. Boo hoo. Asparagus in Lemon, Garlic, and Olive Oil 1 stalk of asparagus 2 cloves of garlic sliced thinly 3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil juice of half a lemon sea salt to taste ground pepper to taste 1 tablespoon shavings of good quality parmesan 1. Bring a pan of water to boil and blanch the asparagus for three minutes. Drain. 2. Warm the olive oil on low heat, and saute the garlic for a minute. Add the asparagus and cook [...]

Oatmeal and Raisin Cookies for Little Monsters

Lordy, these babies are good: Most, chewy, and gloriously fruity. They soften the hard edges of your day, and keep your lil’ monsters smiling when the going gets tough. If only I had the problem of sharing  my new choo choo with a friend.  I strayed from my usual white crockery because I adore this vintage Limoges plate. I found it at my favorite type of thrift shop: the kind you gotta get durtee (that’s right, I said durtee) to find the good stuff. Hooo weee, did I get dusty and musty, but it’s a part of the territory folks. I am wholeheartedly against those fancy vintage establishments where everything is just so. I do lurve (yes, I said lurve) the sense of mystery. Will I find a treasure today, or will I leave empty handed? It’s kind of on par with fishing. It’s a “just having fun, and if I catch something, even better” vibe. There she was, sitting in a polite stack of mismatched plates just like a starlet waiting to be discovered at Schwabs. Isn’t she gorgeous? Jeez, wasn’t I supposed to be talking about cookies? Back on track lady…… Oatmeal and Raisin Cookies for Little Monsters [...]

Carrot Apple Ginger Juice and Mango Smoothie

Hello fellow foodies. It’s been a whirlwind of a week. House hunting may sound like a blast, but it’s a headache, I tell ya. One place has one thing, but it lacks something else, and so on, and so on. At this point, I am grateful that I even sold my house. So many emotions come up when you are trying to find the right place to rest your weary head. Just like preparing healing food, I have to remember that things are better when you take your time. Now if only I could heed my own advice! So far, we have two contenders: a peaceful, zen abode tucked away in the hills, or a salty beach shack that is steps to the sand. Both are small, but humbly and happily formed, and they both have great schools for our son Jake. Hopefully we can reach an affordable agreement with one or the other so it will  come together soon. I promised you all last week that I would share with you my favorite juice: Carrot, apple, and ginger. It has the simple sweetness of apples and carrots, with a gentle zing of ginger. This juice packs a powerful punch of [...]

Blackened Broccoli with Chilli, Lemon and Garlic

We just accepted an offer on our house, which would have most people doing cartwheels (and backflips) in such a dismal housing market, but after all of our celebrating, we cannot seem to find the right house. My husband and I have become raving lunatics, searching all day and night in Los Angeles, even extending our search to real estate in London, and we’re coming up empty handed. Everything seems to be just that bit beyond our financial reach. I’ve been waking up in the middle of the night thinking, “where the hell am I gonna go??” We are truly demented. I am not talking house snobbery here. I just want to find a decent home for our family that is affordable, more than 1200 square feet, and in our son’s school district. Why oh why did I have to grow up in Los Angeles?? I’m sure we will solve our dilemma soon, but I thought I’d share with you the reason for my belated blog post. It’s no fun being a grownup, is it?? With all of the stress of the move, I have been stoking up on veggie juices, multivitamins, organic raw veggie powder (Perfect Food by Garden [...]
